In 2014, the City of Pine Lake partnered with Shades of Green Permaculture Design, Inc. and hosted their annual Permaculture Design Certification course. Students used Pine Lake as a ‘living lab’, spending six months researching, exploring and envisioning solutions to several of Pine Lake’s environmental concerns. Student designs included reimagining the community garden, developing mycofiltration for the wetlands to further filter toxins that enter the lake, creating a bird sanctuary at McAllister Meadow, developing the forest canopy along the commercial district at Rockbridge Road, and proposing regenerative micro-enterprises that could help benefit the City while addressing environmental concerns.
Although the City has not officially endorsed the plan as a whole, it has adopted some of the recommendations in making smart ecological decisions. Currently, in conjunction with the Public Works department, Shades of Green is helping to install the mycofiltration project in the eastern wetlands.
