Pine Lake's Municipal Arts Panel (MAP) celebrated the opening of a new public art space with the launch of "Pandemic Porch Portraits," a photo wall created by Cindy M. Brown, on April 11. The exhibit will be on display at the tennis court beside the Western wetlands, Lakeshore Drive, Pine Lake Park, through the Spring. Admission is free. For more information, email PLArtwall@gmail.com

Featuring portraits of Pine Lakers posing with their families, pets, plants, and creative projects, this outdoor installation documents how our small community has survived and thrived during the current pandemic. “Cindy has taken a series of photographs of us at one of the most stressful times, as neighbors, as a community,” said Mayor Melanie Hammet. “She’s taken portraits of us at home, reflecting on what art means to us, in a city where art means almost everything to us. So, on many levels, this is the perfect exhibit to open Pine Lake’s new public art space.”
The project, which began as photographer Brown’s way of surviving quarantine, grew to include the insight and inspirations of an entire neighborhood. Many of our neighbors’ photos and stories are displayed on the new photo wall, and all are included in Cindy’s accompanying book, “Surviving Quarantine: Porch Portraits from Pine Lake.”

“Pandemic Porch Portraits," sponsored by the City’s Municipal Arts Panel, is the most recent project in Pine Lake’s long tradition of supporting artists and encouraging participation in the arts. Musicians, writers, and artists seem to have always been drawn to Pine Lake, and daily life here is infused with their talents. This did not change during the pandemic. In a close-knit community that usually sponsors monthly music performances, art exhibits, a summer Makers’ Market and LakeFest, an annual fall festival, the creative spirit has moved indoors, but has persisted as a key value and strength of our city. MAP’s mission is to support and promote the creative work that has made Pine Lake an artist haven during these challenging times.
Pine Lake, DeKalb’s smallest city, is located 12 miles east of Atlanta, between Decatur and Stone Mountain. The centrally located park includes a lake and wetlands with walking trails. We look forward to seeing you this Spring!
